Water Governance in the Classrooms
Water governance a main feature in the Science Week organized by Instituto Profesional y Técnico (I.P.T) El Silencio, in Changuinola, Panama
Changuinola, Panama (2012). I.P.T El Silencio held its “Planet Earth” Science Week, October 15 to 19, providing a framework for the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to share with some eighty students about water governance and its activities in this area.
Topics included the importance of water, watersheds, integrated water resource management, good water governance, shared watersheds, transboundary cooperation and actions in the Sixaola River binational watershed. Pablo Rayo, transboundary watershed champion in project BRIDGE (Building River Dialogue and Governance) and active member of the Binational Commission of the Sixaola River Basin, shared his experience and stressed the importance of getting informed and fighting for integrated water resource management.
Generating participatory learning spaces with young people is essential to obtain genuine, permanent changes over time, especially in conservation and sustainable use of natural resources and, of course, good water governance.
