We are here in Cancun, during COP16 where one of the topics that is making its way through the debate is REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation including conservation and sustainable management of forests), writes Lorena Aguila, Global Senior Advisor on Gender for IUCN.
Despite the significant expansion in REDD+ initiatives, there are major gaps in how policy is unfolding, particularly with respect to women’s issues. At IUCN we recognize that immediate and long-term benefits can be achieved by involving women in strategy, decision-making, the distribution of benefits, and capacity building.
Based on this, IUCN in collaboration with WOCAN and WEDO, yesterday launched the Global Initiative on Women and REDD+. The overall objectives of the Initiative are to ensure that global and national REDD+ efforts are gender responsive, leverage women’s leadership to mitigate the effects of climate change, align with sustainable development goals and alleviate poverty.
For the occasion, all participants – women and men – who believe that women can make a difference in REDD initiatives wore red scarves to show their solidarity in this important matter.
