Under the patronage of the Yemeni Minister of Water and Environment HE Dr. Abdel Rahman Eleryani, IUCN, International Union for Conservation of Nature- Regional Office for West Asia conducted a regional training workshop entitled How to Design and Implement Public Awareness Campaigns in partnership with Inwent - Capacity Building International, and Sana’a University. The 5-day-training course, which was held from 4-8 October 2009 in Sana’a – Yemen, built the capacities of thirty trainers on designing and implementing environmental public awareness campaigns.

Representatives from Yemen, Algeria, Morocco, Syria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Palestine participated in this workshop, which is part of a series of courses held every year by IUCN ROWA and Inwent.

The participants concluded the workshop with a number of key recommendations related to building a strong knowledge network that can act as a pioneer in capacity building and experience and knowledge exchange in the Arab region. In addition, the team also recommended involving this network in the Inwent forum on water governance, activating its role in providing the ideal platform for knowledge exchange and lessons learned among the network members. The use of Arabic language was also highlighted as an important issue to better communicate through training programmes and knowledge sharing.

This course was an outcome of a training needs assessment agreed upon by the participants of a previous workshop that was held in Amman in May 2009 on designing environmental awareness networks. Inwent and IUCN ROWA agreed to hold two more regional workshops within the coming months on public awareness campaigns, realizing the pressing need to build the capacities of all stakeholders to better address the critical environmental issues in the region.
