Palau’s green home model grabs regional financing attention

03 October 2011 | News story

Thirteen financing institutions from the Pacific region have gathered in Koror this week to learn from Palau’s successful green home energy model.

The four day workshop titled “Home loans for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Workshop”, is a first to be held in the region and will inform the thirteen members of the Association of Development Financing Institutions in the Pacific (ADFIP) on how Palau has been implementing its energy home loan programme.

For the past three years, the National Development Bank of Palau has been running a very good home loan programme that promotes renewable energy and energy efficiency,” says Anare Matakiviti, Coordinator of the Energy Programme at IUCN Oceania Regional Office.

In the next few days we will inform ADFIP members how Palau is running their programme and in doing so we hope that they will replicate the programme in their own countries

The energy home loan programme, targets new residential and commercial buildings including tourism outlets and so far it has benefited not only the customers, but also the wider Palau economy through new businesses, employment creation, less diesel use and a renewed national interest into energy efficiency measures.

The workshop was opened on Monday morning by the President of the Republic of Palau, His Excellency Johnson Toribiong.

The impacts of climate change on Small Island Developing States(SIDS) particularly for us here in the Pacific will require a paradigm shift in how we provide energy to promote socio-economic development,” says Toribiong.

Palau together with the Federated States of Miconesia and the Republic of the Marshall Islands has initiated the Green Energy Micronesia Initiative which places emphasis on energy efficiency and renewable energy to try and minimise the imapcts of climate change,” Toribiong added.

The workshop has been organized by ADFIP and IUCN Oceania Regional Office with assistance from the Centre for Development Enterprise Regional Office in Suva, the SPREP PIGGAREP project and the Secretariat of the Pacific Community’s North REP project.
