Following a tragic accident last weekend, on 3 November 2012, we have lost a dear colleague.

Warren, a New Zealander, joined the ELC on 1 September 2012 as an expert on climate change and REDD issues. He was immediately fascinated by the impact of IUCN on the world, which he witnessed at first hand during his participation at the IUCN Congress in Jeju.

He was not only a very good lawyer, but also a positive person that settled so well into our organization in a very short time. He was a valuable addition to our team and showed his extraordinary personality in every situation.

If anyone wishes to share their personal experiences of Warren, please do so below.

From Julia Marton-Lefevre, IUCN Director General:

We are stunned and deeply saddened by Warren Waetford’s tragic death. He joined the Environmental Law Centre (ELC) as Legal Officer only in September this year, and got off to an exciting and fast-moving start through participating in the World Conservation Congress in Jeju, Republic of Korea. On that occasion Warren demonstrated his interpersonal skills in networking and building contacts with staff members, Commission members, and representatives of IUCN Members.

Warren also brought to IUCN his experience as Associate Observer Organizations Liaison Officer with the UN Climate Change Secretariat, as well as from his role as Legal Adviser with the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and as New Zealand Deputy Permanent Representative in Vienna, Austria. He was immediately “adopted “ by the ELC staff, fitted well in the team, and was much appreciated for his professionalism and his generous and “fun” personality. He is sadly missed by those who had the pleasure to meet and work with him.

Good by Warren
Dear Warren,

It was great getting to know you in Jeju. I enjoyed deeply how you made me remember my life in New Zealand as student... your Maori accent... the Haka.

There is always an end for all of us but I was shocked to hear the early and tragic end for you. There were so many things you needed to do for the sake of our Planet!

It is now our job, to carry on, hoping that that you will be at ease and proud of the things we can accomplish. You are part of that!

Rest in peace, Warren.

A bright spirit
Warren,
Your bright spirit shone through from the moment anyone met you. You seemed to have just the right mix of charm, humour, skill and cleverness that made collaborating with you at the Conservation Campus events in Jeju to be more fun than work. I remember your mischievous yet proud smile as you managed to deliver lunches to the rooms, despite being told it was unthinkable...always going above and beyond, and with a clear vision. I had been looking forward to working with you again, but glad to be part of the community to carry on your vision. Be well and shine on.

Really Sorry
Warren, It was an absolute privilege having met you, if only briefly. You possesed a brilliant mind, the incredible ability to simplify complex issues, humility and a great sense of humour. My thoughts are with your family.

My deepest sympathy to his whanau and friends...it is truly sad to use such a talented son, friend and colleague. He promised to contribute much and now his work is cut short. This is a loss for his whanau, Aotearoa, and the world and work he was enriching. My deep respect and aroha.
