A high-level conference entitled “Towards Rio+20” chaired by MEP Vittorio Prodi was held in the European Parliament on 24 April 2012. The event brought together over 100 participants, including policy makers, International Organisations’ representatives, and stakeholders.

The conference recalled that the 2012 Summit in Rio will keep the human component at the heart of development by attempting to achieve sustainability.

“We should change our way of measuring and shaping development,” argued Antonio Vigilante - Director of the UNDP Brussels office.  All the speakers agreed that there is an urgent need to go beyond Gross Domestic Product by also taking into account other indicators that fully incorporate the human dimension such as human health. A joint appeal has been launched for the adoption of an Inclusive and equitable Green Economy Roadmap, paying equal attention to the three pillars of sustainability: environmental, social and economic.

Among other high level speakers were Wendel Trio – Director of Climate Action Network Europe, Roberto Bertollini – Director of the World Health Organisation in Brussels, Antonio Vigilante – Director of the UNDP Brussels office, Staffan Nilsson – President of the European Economic and Social Committee, Dick Toet – Vice-President European External Affairs at Unilever, and Karl Falkenberg – Director General in DG Environment, European Commission.

Vittorio Prodi concluded that going beyond sovereignty, or at least changing the way sovereignty is managed, is a prerequisite for achieving World Environmental Governance.

The event was organized by the Secretariat of the European Parliament Intergroup “Climate Change, Biodiversity and Sustainable Development,” run jointly by IUCN and the European Bureau for Conservation and Development (EBCD).
