Healthy nature protects against disasters-IUCN
Background:
More than 220 000 people were killed as a result of the three most deadly natural disasters in 2008: Cyclone Nagris in Myanmar, the earthquake in China and the floods in India. How to reduce vulnerability to disasters in poor communities affected by climate change, urbanization and environmental degradation, will be at the focus of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction event in Geneva, Switzerland from 16 to 19 June. The International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR), the main UN body mandated with reducing the impacts of disasters on people, will bring together for a second time government representatives, donor agencies, the private sector and civil society to share best practices, discuss challenges and opportunities. IUCN will demonstrate how sustainable management of natural resources helps reduce vulnerability to natural hazards. It will also draw on its experience in post-disaster relief and reconstruction actions.
