Led by the IUCN Director General, Julia Marton-Lefèvre, a delegation from the secretariat (composed of Margarita Astralaga, Aimé Nianogo Ali Kaka and Jean-Yves Pirot) paid a working visit to the African Development Bank in Tunis on December 2nd and 3rd, 2009. The delegation was received by President Donald Kaberuka in the presence of the OSVP Vice-President Kamal Elkheshen.

The visit aimed, firstly at discussing the future cooperation between IUCN and AfDB, following the signature of a MoU between the two institutions in August 2008; and secondly, at coming to an agreement on future steps forward to provide concrete actions to the collaboration.

A technical meeting chaired by the OSAN.4 Division Manager K. Johm was held between the IUCN delegation and experts of the ADB. A presentation by IUCN initially outlined how the institution is structured, the content of its programme 2009-2012 and presented potential areas of collaboration with the Bank. During the discussions, opportunity for both institutions to collaborate on several aspects to improve the delivery of their respective programs was noted. The following potential areas have been identified: Knowledge Management, Global Environment Facility, Independent scientific and technical assessments, Energy and climate change, Catchment management, Integrated Water Resources Management.

Owing to its expertise on local community participation, land restoration, and river basin management in general, IUCN is involved in the implementation of programs planned for 2010 by the OSAN namely the Niger Basin Authority (second phase) and the Mano River and the Kandadji Environmental Monitoring programmes.

The parties will agree on the monitoring mechanism to be implemented. It was suggested to IUCN to appoint an expert who will work with ADB to further explore the issues identified and the operationalization of the collaboration.
