New Coordinator for the Central and West Africa Water Resources and Wetlands Programme

Prof. Aboubacar AWAÏSS as the new coordinator of the Programme for Water Resources and Wetlands (PREZOH) within PACO, starting 1st October 2012, based in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

Specialized in continental hydrobiology, Prof. Aboubacar started his career in conservation in 1993 as a member of the IUCN Network of Experts on wetlands in Niger and in March 1997 as a founding member of the Group of Specialists on West African Sustainable Use of IUCN's wildlife. He has worked for over a decade on topics primarily related to wetlands as: (i) Representative for Africa at the Scientific and Technical Assessment Panel on the Ramsar Convention (1999-2003), (ii) Programme Officer on Education and public awareness on wetlands in the West Africa Regional Office of Wetlands International (2000-2002), (iii) West Africa Freshwater Programme Coordinator for WWF (2003-2010), whose main component is the Niger River basin. Since early 2012, he was already working for IUCN, Coordinating the Poverty Reduction and Environmental Management Initiative (PREMI) in West Africa.

Associate professor at the University of Niamey in Niger, he was responsible for the training on environmental management at the Regional Center for Special Education in Agriculture (CRESA) and author of several collaborative works on natural resource and wetland management in partnership with state institutions and NGOs in several West African countries.
