The Richness of the Gulf of Mannar

Harbouring over 3,000 species of fauna and flora, the Gulf of Mannar (GoM) is a heaven for fin fish, crustaceans (prawns and crabs), mollusks (oysters), echinoderms (sea cucumber), coelenterates (corals) and aquatic mammals (dugong). Vast areas of sea grass beds are also common in the area.

International Mountain Day Celebrated at Ziarat

IUCN Pakistan, Ziarat Office in collaboration with the local communities celebrated International Mountain Day 2010 at Ziarat. The participants belonged to the Valley Conservation Committees and the Juniper Environmental Council Ziarat. The event was organized to create awareness about the significance of mountains and to mobilise communities for sustainable use of mountain resources. The event began with planting of saplings in ‘Khandi Mountain Range Reserve’ by the community representatives and other participants followed by an awareness raising ceremony held at the PTDC Hotel. …

Fishermen trained for using Turtle Exclusion Device – a major step major towards Conservation of Marine Turtles in Pakistan

Karachi, November 25, 2010 IUCN Pakistan under its Balochistan Partnerships for Sustainable Development Programme organized a one-day training for fishermen for using Turtle Exclusion Device (TED). Tackling the tiger crisis

Crucial talks to bring Asia’s most iconic animal, the tiger, back from the brink of extinction are taking place in St Petersburg, Russia, from 21 to 24 November. The International Tiger Forum, hosted by Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, includes leaders from 13 countries which still have wild tigers, along with conservation organizations including IUCN. They are expected to adopt a high-level declaration and a global recovery plan to save this critically endangered animal. …
