El 15 de febrero de 2014, el Ministro de Agricultura, Ganadería y Alimentación, Elmer López, y el viceministro de Desarrollo Rural, Carlos Anzueto, realizaron una gira de campo al Proyecto Desarrollo de la Cadena Productiva de Cacao en la Ecoregión Lachuá, implementado por la Unión Internacional de la Naturaleza (UICN) y la organización comunitaria indígena FUNDALACHUA, con el fin de conocer esta experiencia y buscar elementos y criterios para el desarrollo de la estrategia de fomento de la cadena a nivel nacional.  …

Where there is a shared vision among participants, dialogue has positive results, as occurred in the January 27th General Assembly of the Binational Commission of the Sixaola River Basin (CBCRS), attended by 36 representatives of government institutions, local governments, native peoples, and civil society. The agenda included a presentation by Dr. Alejandro Iza, Director of the Environmental Law Centre of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), on the general principles of international water law.

New marine protected area in Haiti

On last December the Haitian government published the creation of Haiti’s second Marine Protected Area (MPA) in the official journal, Le Moniteur. The new MPA is hereby called the “The Three Bays Protected Area (Parc Marin des Trois Baies)” and is located in Northeastern Haiti.

Healthy Reef in Curacao at Oostpunt

Sixty years of Coral Reef research in Curaçao

The Caribbean island of Curaçao lies just a little bit to the North of Venezuela and is surrounded by more than 100 square kilometers of coral reefs. In a recent compilation of all available scientific literature on the state of Caribbean reefs by the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN), some of Curaçao’s reefs, especially those along the eastside of the island, rank among the best remaining in the Caribbean region. In addition to its fringing reefs, large inland bays can be found around the island harboring mangrove/sea grass communities that serve as nursery areas for certain types of reef fish that more abundant than on similar islands that lack inland bays. Curaçao’s reefs currently range in quality from degraded to almost pristine.   …
