IUCN ESARO regional office in Nairobi recently hosted two JICA officials who are doing a preparatory study with a view to developing a hydropower master plan for the Government of Uganda. The objective of the preparatory study is to formulate a master plan for long term power development in Uganda. The results of the study are expected to contribute to the smooth implementation of the master plan.

Dr. Kanji Usui and Mr. Yoshikazu Wada were met by the Global Coordinator of Invasive Species, Professor Geoffrey Howard, who informed them of IUCN’s position on hydropower development.

Prof. Howard also informed them of the challenges facing hydropower development in the region and referred them to technical reports, which include the World Commission on Dams Report, a joint initiative of IUCN and the World Ban
