International Year of Biodiversity: A wealth of information

29 March 2010 | News story

The International Year of Biodiversity will be most effective if every single human being on this planet understands why biodiversity is important and has the tools to act upon saving the loss of biodiversity” says IUCN’s Director General Julia Marton-Lefèvre.

Throughout the year, IUCN is celebrating biological diversity – the variety of life on earth – and boosting awareness of how important it is for our lives. Most people appreciate the beauty of the natural world, but awareness of biodiversity, how seriously it is threatened, and the implications for human wellbeing, is alarmingly low.

IUCN wants to see biodiversity at the top of the global agenda, leading to stronger action from all sectors of society including government and industry to safeguard it. To do this we have to show how biodiversity is essential for sustaining our natural living systems—or ecosystems—that provide us with clean air and water, food, building materials, fuel and medicine.

A wealth of information and resources is available for IUCN Members, Commission members, partners and the general public, including a dedicated section on the IUCN website (www.iucn.org/iyb) featuring:

A range of International Year of Biodiversity themed email signatures for IUCN Members have been produced in IUCN’s three official languages: English, French and Spanish, and featuring a choice of 20 different species. This information has been sent to IUCN Members via email. Please contact the Membership Focal Point in your region/country for more information.

The IUCN Red List ‘Species of the Day’ feature has been launched online to increase awareness of the enormous variety of life on our planet, and raise the profile of threatened species. Each day in 2010, a different species is featured on the IUCN homepage and other websites, providing an insight into the astonishing level of biodiversity that exists. If you are interested in showcasing the ‘Species of the Day’ feature from your own website, please contact IUCN colleagues Kathryn Pintus (kathryn.pintus@iucn.org) or Rachel Roberts (sscchairoffice@iucn.org) who can provide you with the necessary technical information for displaying the Species of the Day link button.

Furthermore, iGoogle - a personalized Google homepage that can be customized with web feeds and gadgets - is offering IUCN’s Species of the Day to its tens of millions of users around the globe. What this means is that anyone can add the Species of the Day feature to their personal iGoogle page with a click of a button. Taking action is simple! Just click here.
