Preparing early work of IPBES

“Following the IPBES official establishment, IUCN believes that all contributions to facilitate its activities are important. The development of a "conceptual framework" for all IPBES reports and work is among the priorities,” says Mr Pierre Commenville from IUCN ahead of an expert meeting to be held in October 2012, Paris, France.
„In relation to ecosystem assessments, "conceptual framework" is a concise summary in words or pictures about relationship between people and nature. It is simple and easy-to-understand representation of key components of the interaction between humans and their environment.”
The "conceptual framework" will be drafted by the Multidisciplinary Expert Panel (MEP), a forthcoming group of experts advising IPBES on scientific and technical issues.
To facilitate its work, UNESCO, on behalf of the IPBES Secretariat, has launched a preparatory work and is organizing an expert workshop. It aims to produce elements of the “conceptual framework” for consideration by the MEP and IUCN will support and participate in this workshop. The outcomes will be circulated and open for comments, including from IUCN constituency.
The final "conceptual framework" will be adopted by IPBES.

IPBES stands for an Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services. IPBES will be an interface between the scientific community and policy makers that aims to build capacity for and strengthen the use of science in policy making. IPBES will respond to requests for scientific information related to biodiversity and ecosystem services from governments, relevant UN Conventions, bodies and other relevant stakeholders. Governments have agreed that the four main functions of IPBES will be knowledge generation, options for assessment, policy relevant tools and capacity building. The preparatory work ahead of the first plenary meeting of IPBES (21-26 January 2013, Bonn, Germany) is currently underway.
