Time to get "smart" on US biofuels, according to IUCN US Members

20 February 2009 | News story

Two IUCN Members, Worldwatch Institute and Sierra Club, have joined forces to launch a joint publication on Smart Choices for Biofuels. The report highlights the need for important policy reforms at this critical juncture in America's effort to increase biofuel use.

The report outlines the economic and environmental impacts of first-generation biofuels, particularly corn ethanol, and proposes strategies to make the industry more sustainable.
Smart Choices for Biofuels offers specific policy recommendations in four broad categories:
• developing sustainability standards;
• advancing biofuels production and new technologies;
• creating green jobs through biofuels; and
• promoting policy coherence across energy sectors.
