IUCN supports new WaterWiki

16 July 2010 | News story

The WaterWiki is a new website providing a space to interact and share valuable water knowledge online. The WaterWiki is a freely accessible information resource that is growing rapidly into a global reference for water professionals.

It was developed by the International Water Association (IWA) and has been launched for the global water community. It also provides networking features enabling online discussions and interactions with water professionals and peers across the world.

The IUCN Water Programme is contributing to the WaterWiki with reference material on present-day topics, such as the implications of climate change for water resources. Sharing ideas with water professionals is important to build understanding of complex environmental issues. Open-source platforms like Wikis can be regarded as problem-solving approaches where scenarios of sustainability are developed collaboratively", said Stefano Barchiesi, IUCN Water Programme Project Officer. “Making new and innovative topics and information on water management easily accessible online is a great advantage and step forward for the international water community”, added Mark Smith, Head of the IUCN Water Programme.

The WaterWiki is more than an encyclopedia. IWA and partners are building a community of practice that will make it a crucial online destination for both researchers and practitioners currently working in the water, wastewater and environmental science, management and development fields.

Some of the features on the WaterWiki include:

Featured Articles list complete and up to date articles on the Water Wiki, as selected by the Wiki reviewers. Visitors can check coverage in their specialist areas and leave comments for authors in the Article Discussion area.

Group spaces form a feature for groups and research networks, a free web space groups to communicate and store information. The WaterWiki provides a host for projects, offering customizable areas for sharing ideas and discussing research findings.

The WaterWiki features a Forum where registered users can have informal discussions around different subject areas. This is also the space where talks about upcoming conferences and events, calls for papers, posts and linkages are shared.

Finally, the organization page provides a space where organization profiles and links to relevant web pages are stored. You can find the IUCN Water Programme by clicking here.
