The 9th meeting of the Working Group on Access and Benefit Sharing of the Convention on Biological Diversity (WGABS9) took place in Cali, Colombia, until 28 March.
This was the last meeting out of the three mandated by the ninth meeting of the Conference of the Parties, held in May 2008 (in Bonn), to finalize the negotiations of the international regime on access and benefit-sharing. The international regime is to be adopted at the tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties in October 2010 (in Nagoya, Japan).
This process responds to the third objective of the Convention on Biological Diversity, which is the "fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of the utilization of genetic resources, including by appropriate access to genetic resources and by appropriate transfer of relevant technologies, taking into account all rights over those resources and to technologies, and by appropriate funding".
IUCN was present at this meeting with a small delegation and followed the negotiations, supporting national delegations.
