The CBD has played an important role in developing approaches to biodiversity conservation but implementation has been sluggish and the world has not met the 2010 target of reducing biodiversity loss. The results of the Nagoya conference will provide fresh impetus to global conservation efforts.

The CBD recognizes that biological diversity is about more than plants, animals and micro-organisms and their ecosystems—it is about people and our need for food security, medicines, fresh air and water, shelter, and a clean and healthy environment in which to live.
