DGCS and IUCN sign Agreement to support the Albanian Ministry of Environment
04 December 2009 | News story
The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Directorate General for Development Cooperation (DGCS), signed an Agreement with IUCN on December 2nd that lays the foundation for substantive collaboration in delivering important conservation and environmental management outcomes in Albania
The Agreement will support the delivery of a project that will strengthen the Albanian Ministry of Environment’s capacity to effectively manage its protected areas, will help raise awareness of biodiversity, and will contribute to improving control over the movement of hazardous waste. It will also demonstrate approaches to improving local socio-economic conditions in communities near protected areas through the promotion of sustainable alternative biodiversity supporting economic activities.
The project will be implemented through the IUCN Regional Office for Pan-Europe and the IUCN Programme Office for South-East Europe in Belgrade. “This project represents another important element of IUCN’s expanding work in the region. It will measurably help enhance the Ministry of Environment’s capacity in two important areas of its mandate. IUCN is grateful for the support provided by DGCS and we look forward to close and productive collaboration with DGCS, the Ministry of Environment and other national project partners in attaining the project’s objectives” says Paul Grigoriev, IUCN’s Regional Programme Coordinator for Pan-Europe.
The project will start in January 2010 and is expected to be implemented over a two year period. Key results will be announced in the course of the project’s implementation on the IUCN Regional Office for Pan-Europe website: http://www.iucn.org/about/union/secretariat/offices/europe/
