On 25 November 2010 the results of the media competition “Forests of Armenia” were announced in Yerevan.
The media competition “Forests of Armenia” was conducted as part of the ENPI-FLEG Program to encourage comprehensive and consistent coverage of forest related issues in the Armenian media. Journalists from Yerevan, Vanadzor, Gyumri, Ijevan, Alaverdi and Stepanavan participated in the competition and submitted materials produced during the last year. These materials covered a wide range of issues, from forest management, protection and conservation to use, illegal logging and its consequences.
A selection committee of well-known environmental experts and journalists, assessed the materials and named winners in four categories: Best Television Report, Best Radio Report, Best Printed Article, and Best Online Material. Additionally, two incentive prizes were awarded.
During the award ceremony, the selection committee members emphasized the importance of journalists covering forest related issues. One person stated that extensive coverage by journalists helped enforcing law to initiate criminal proceedings against illegal actions, and also resulted in the dismissal of dishonest forest guards and foresters.
Recent trends in covering forest related issues show that journalists are looking deeper into the roots of political, economic and social aspects of the existing problems.
