Reviewing results from mangrove co-management projects and implications for scaling up
11 January 2010 | News story
Body (NCB) organized its second meeting. (The first was held in June 2009.) The first part of the
meeting was devoted to presentations and discussions of the results of two mangrove restoration and
rehabilitation projects: one in Thanh Hoa Province supported by CARE and one in Soc Trang Province
supported by GTZ. The agenda and participants list are attached below.
These two projects operate in very different physical environments but both aim to give local
communities a strong incentive to conserve mangroves while complying with Vietnamese law. They
did this by facilitating the negotiation of agreements between local communities, people’s committees
and local forestry department offices that defined the rights, roles, and responsibilities of local
communities in managing mangroves. In Thanh Hoa, the focus was on planting mangroves and in
Soc Trang on local resource use and rehabilitation. The agreements were approved by the district
and commune people’s committees respectively.
