Doris Cellarius receives major Sierra Club Award (see photo):
Doris Cellarius - an active member of CEESP and SEAPRISE with a leadership role working on biofuel issues - was presented with the 2010 William E. Colby Award, the Sierra Club's highest award for service to the Club itself; it “honors an outstanding record of leadership, dedication, and service to the Sierra Club as typified by William E. Colby” (Sierra Club Director and Officer 1900-1949; founder of the Club's Outings program), at the annual Sierra Club Awards Dinner in San Francisco on Saturday, September 25, 2010.
In presenting the Award, Robin Mann, Sierra Club President, said the following:
Doris Cellarius has been an active and highly effective Club leader at the group, chapter, national and international levels for more than 40 years. The committees, task forces and delegations she has been involved with are too numerous to name, but Doris has been regularly trusted to chair important committees on the leading edge of our conservation campaigns. She led the way in compiling the Club's Conservation Handbook and was the primary author of the Club's policies on hazardous waste management and pest management.
Doris is one of the Club's most knowledgeable experts on toxics, endocrine disruptors and volatile organic compounds, and has helped countless activists understand and battle these deadly pollutants across the United States. She has led the Club's efforts to help clean up the Hanford Nuclear Reservation and the Puget Sound.
As a member of the Club's Water Sentinels Team since 2003, Doris has been instrumental in helping build the program from 7 project sites in 6 states to a nationwide program of projects and partnerships in more than 40 states.
Over the years, Doris has not only been a leader on important work, but in the process she has inspired and encouraged many new, engaged and educated volunteer leaders.
We are delighted to present this award to her tonight. The attached photo shows Doris (right) receiving the award from Robin Mann, Sierra Club President.
