Planning and Learning Workshop of the project, ‘Improving Natural Resource Governance for Poverty Reduction in Sri Lanka’

IUCN Headquarters and Sri Lanka Country Office organised a Planning and Learning Workshop of the ‘Improving Natural Resource Governance for Poverty Reduction in Sri Lanka’ project at the Galle Face Hotel, Colombo during 8-9 June, 2011 with its partners, The Centre for Environmental Justice (CEJ)  and Public Interest Law Foundation (PILF). The revised work plan with the emphasis on expected impacts were agreed upon at the workshop.

The overall goal of the global 5-year programme, financed by UKaid from the Department for International Development's Governance and Transparency Fund (DFID's GTF) is contributing to improve natural resource governance for rural poverty reduction and its purpose is to improve livelihood security in selected countries through better environmental governance, including fair and equitable access to natural resources, new benefit sharing arrangements, and more participative and transparent decision making. The outcomes expected are improvements in institutions, in policies and in decision-making mechanisms as they relate to natural resources.

 

This is a portfolio of 10 projects in Africa (3), Asia (3), South America (1), West Asia (1), with one cross-cutting component on protected area management and one coordinating component based at IUCN Headquarters.

 

The sub-project in Sri Lanka works to improve natural resource governance by enhancing capacity at all levels, pilot testing better natural resource governance models and influencing policies, processes and institutional changes related to natural resource governance. The project has four pilot sites in Sri Lanka: two lagoons, the Puttalam Lagoon in the Puttalam Administrative District (Northwestern cost) and the Periyakalapu Lagoon in Ampara District (East coast), and two forest reserves, the Peak Wilderness in the Ratnapura Administrative District and  the Nilgala Forest Reserve in the Monaragala Administrative District.
