Vascular plants of Greece: an annotated checklist
After more than a century from the last publication (Halácsy’s Conspectus Florae Graecae, 1900-1904), Greece’s plant diversity has been comprehensively inventoried in a new joint publication of the IUCN Candidate Member Hellenic Botanical Society and the Botanic Garden and Botanical Museum Berlin-Dahlem.
Greece hosts a remarkable diversity of vascular plants, ranking among the highest in Europe and the Mediterranean with 5,752 species and 1,893 subspecies (native and naturalized), representing 6600 taxa. Greece is also one of the most important centres of endemism in Europe and the Mediterranean with 1,278 endemic species (22.2% of the total number of species) and 452 endemic subspecies.
Vascular Plants of Greece: An Annotated Checklist provides a complete, detailed and up-to-date baseline reference for the plant diversity of Greece, bringing together a vast body of information previously widely dispersed in various regional foras, floristic dissertations, monographs, composite works and individual research papers. It gives an overall analysis of the Greek vascular flora, useful not only to systematists but to all those involved in biodiversity conservation and environmental management in Greece.
The checklist offers an incentive for further research and cooperation on the knowledge, and hence the conservation of the angiosperms, gymnosperms and pteridophytes of Greece, particularly focusing on taxa that might be or become threatened or endangered in Greece due to habitat loss and landscape exploitation.
The book includes the complete floristic catalogue of the vascular plants of Greece, with annotations on distribution, chorology, life-form and habitats, as well as various appendices with excluded taxa, comments and 24 colour plates with photographs of more than 200 species.
