Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are a particularly controversial aspect of biotechnology. They are becoming increasingly prevalent in many countries and are being used in many sectors, from agriculture to health and energy supplies.
IUCN Members have acknowledged this growing trend and, while noting the potential of GMOs to improve livelihoods and promote development, have expressed such concern regarding the potential negative impacts of GMOs on food safety and the environment that they have called for a moratorium on their further release.
