L’année 2013 s’ouvre sur d’heureux auspices. En effet, le PRCM qui a réuni durant une décennie de nombreux acteurs de la conservation du littoral ouest africain sur la base d’un Programme, change de configuration et prend une nouvelle allure. Au cours de l’année 2012 s’est achevé le processus de réflexion sur les principes et orientations de sa troisième phase. Le PRCM est considéré désormais comme un Partenariat regroupant une vaste coalition régionale partageant des défis communs et non comme un Programme agissant sur la base d’un portefeuille de projets.

Phnom Penh, Cambodia, 16 June 2013 (IUCN) – UNESCO’s annual World Heritage meeting, which starts today in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, will see a total of 34 natural and cultural areas considered for World Heritage status. The World Heritage Committee will also review the state of existing World Heritage sites, including some that could be placed on the List of World Heritage in Danger. The ever-increasing number of iconic areas facing threats to their unique status puts the credibility of the World Heritage Convention at stake, according to IUCN.

Marine turtle conservation in Viet Nam – more is needed!

Viet Nam’s coastal provinces used to be important nesting grounds for many species of marine turtle. But the numbers of nesting sites has declined sharply over the past 10 years as beaches have been converted to shrimp ponds, hotels, and other uses, and marine turtles have been killed as fishing by-catch or suffocated by plastic bags. For the past five years, IUCN, with funding from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services (USFWS), has partnered with the Sub-Department of Capture Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DECAFIREP) in Binh Dinh Province to promote the conservation of marine turtles.
