Biodiversity conservation in Viet Nam: a perfect storm

A “perfect storm” is an expression that describes an event where a rare combination of circumstances will aggravate a situation drastically. The term is also used to describe an actual phemonenon that happens to occur in such a confluence, resulting in an event of unusual magnitude. Over the last few years, a series of reports have documented the disappearance of Vietnam’s globally threatened plants and animals and the ineffectiveness of current management responses. Loss of species matters because while degraded habitats can often be restored and genetic material preserved, extinction is forever.
