The Follow-up Workshop

IUCN Convenes Workshop to Follow-up the ISRP Report on the Western Gray Whale

IUCN has accepted a proposal from Sakhalin Energy Investment Company (SEIC) and its potential lenders to organize a workshop following-up the report of the Independent Scientific Review Panel. The Panel’s report, released in February, evaluated the potential implications of planned oil and gas developments on the critically endangered Western Gray Whale population. The workshop will provide additional scientific information and clarification to SEIC and their potential lenders as they now make decisions on the Sakhalin II Phase 2 project, with the aim of ensuring the whale population is protected. The workshop will have a technical and scientific focus and will involve specialists from the Independent Scientific Review Panel, SEIC, the potential lenders, environmental NGOs and IUCN.

Additional Information

Purpose of the Follow-up Workshop

The overall purpose of the workshop is to inform decision making by SEIC and Lenders, as related to the Sakhalin II Phase 2 oil and gas project and the conservation of the Western Gray Whale population. Further information about the specific objectives, the process and the timing of the workshop and the subsequent report, and the scope for the discussions are available in the Follow-up Workshop Terms of Reference (pdf). The Workshop Terms of Reference were established by IUCN through a process of engagement with key stakeholders.
