Restoring forests to improve livelihoods - four years of success and influence

In almost four years of existence, IUCN's Livelihoods and Landscape Strategy (LLS) has changed the lives of poor communities around the world by restoring forest services, improving livelihoods and creating means of income. Jamie Gordon, Knowledge Management Officer for LLS, describes a few of those success stories and explains how LLS experience has been adopted as a model by governments and donor organizations for new strategies. …

IUCN Director General speaks of her hopes for the International Year of Biodiversity

The world is facing a global extinction crisis which threatens not only the natural environment but mankind itself. Species, ecosystems and natural resources, which all life on earth depends upon, must be safeguarded before it’s too late. That’s the message from IUCN for the International Year of Biodiversity. Islands in isolation – seeking solutions to communities in crisis

Islands, be they large or small, developed or developing, face their own particular challenges in a rapidly changing world. As climate change and the loss of biodiversity make their mark, the Global Island Partnership (GLISPA) is trying to help islanders conserve and sustain the invaluable natural resources that support people, cultures and livelihoods around the world. Kate Brown, IUCN’s GLISPA coordinator, says that urgent action is needed to safeguard islands under threat.   …
