New Tools for Mountain Ecosystems Management
07 September 2009 | Event
Innovative tools and experiences for mountain ecosystems management were highlighted at final workshop of the Hindu Kush Karakoram Himalaya (HKKH) Partnership in Katmandu, Nepal.
The workshop highlighted results of project approaches and methods, management oriented research, land cover mapping, capacity building and institutionalization efforts. The project produced a wide range of technical publications and management planning documentation along with a series of tourism and community brochures, publications and maps. A highlight of the event was the launch of the flagship product, the Decision Support Toolbox (DST) developed by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) under the HKKH.
The Workshop was inaugurated by Yuba Raj Bhusal, Secretary, Ministry of Forest and Soil Conservation, Nepal. The workshop was attended by over 100 participants from Myanmar, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Nepal, India, China and Pakistan. The last two days of the workshop were held in the computer lab of ICIMOD where hands on training were provided to a group of selected participants to give them a feel on the use of DST software and models in it. Participants exchanged additional knowledge about the HKKH region and DST and offered useful suggestions for the future.
The Hindu Kush Karakoram Himalaya (HKKH) Partnership is supported by the Italian Cooperation (MAE-DGCS) and implemented by IUCN Nepal in partnership with ICIMOD, Ev-K2-CNR, and CESVI.
