As part of the scientific component of the Seamounts project, two research cruises were planned in the soutwest Indian Ocean in 2009 and 2011.

These two expeditions aim to improve scientific understanding of the role of seamount ecosystems in global ocean biodiversity and therefore describe the marine communities of the southwest Indian Ocean region in order to understand and quantify their diversity, biogeography and ultimately what is driving the energy supply and pathways within the seamount system.
