Biodiversity Policy Training Series

InWEnt - Capacity Building International initiated a training programme on environmental policy and law in the South Caucasus countries. The Regional Environmental Policy in the South Caucasus 2008-11 programme is managed by the InWEnt division Environment, Energy and Water in Berlin. Adelphi Research and the IUCN Environmental Law Centre have been tasked to implement the thematic theme “Biodiversity Policy and Management”, in collaboration with the IUCN Programme Office for the Southern Caucasus in Tbilisi.

The overall goal of this training programme is to strenghten the Environment Ministries of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia institutionally and their capacity to approximate national environmental legislation and administrative directives to the relevant directives of the EU. The following modular courses are offered to contribute to the further development of the region's nature conservation policies and legislation:

Course 1: Integrated biodiversity-related legislation to approximate the EU acquis communautaire
Course 2: Ecological networks: Design, legal basis, institutional framework and implementation in practice
Course 3: Legal Frameworks for Access to Genetic Resources and Fair and Equitable Benefit Sharing.
An international training course will be arranged to conclude the national training series. The training programme targets senior officials, middle management and junior professionals of the Environment Ministry of each country whose work relates to the respective topic.


1. Development of three training modules for the above courses, including course books, case studies and exercises, power point presentations, in close cooperation with the Ministries of Environment in the three South Caucasus countries

2. Organization of three national training courses in each participating country and one international study trip for national Ministry staff and external stakeholders

3. Internet-based helpdesk support to training participants
