CEC in 2009: Learning for Professional Development

CEC members are engaged in Education for Sustainable Development, children and nature, distance learning and more -- education is broadly defined in CEC. In 2009, the emerging focus was on capacity building through professional development.

In recent years, CEC members have been engaged in the governmental and NGO processes linked to the United Nations Decade on Education for Sustainable Development (UNDESD). A number of our members are in academia, pursuing research and teaching closely tied to IUCN interests. And then we push the envelope, advocating “new learning” approaches that may be formal, informal, interactive, participatory, innovative and online through the World Conservation Learning Network (WCLN)

A network for conservation learning

WCLN will be a gateway to networks of higher education institutions and stimulate cooperation on learning products. The network also seeks to make available information on tools, short courses and training opportunities, and to recommend people and organizations that can support learning.

In 2009, the Commission began building a “www” clearinghouse that will serve as a user friendly avenue to access WCLN resources.

World Conservation Institute

What is more tangibly emerging is a focus on capacity building through professional development, with a World Conservation Institute. This CEC initiative aims to offer a world conservation curriculum for professional development covering the areas of the IUCN programme. CEC member Professor  Michael Moss negotiated a Memorandum of Understanding between IUCN and Royal Rhodes University, Canada, in 2009 to create the World Conservation Institute. The Institute will offer professionally-oriented programmes and courses at three levels: Certificate, Diploma and Master. Royal Rhodes will confer the awards and offer a core of courses. Optional courses will be chosen from a network of universities in different regions of the world with which CEC has established relationships for this purpose

ESD - Education for Sustainable Development

• CEC member Konai Helu Thaman attended the Bonn UNESCO World Conference on ESD as a workshop Cluster Reporter and a member of the drafting committee. She gave a side event on culture and ESD focusing on traditional Pacific navigation. Konai later presented a seminar at the University of the South Pacific. Her topic was “Bonn and Beyond: Re-orienting teaching and learning towards Sustainable Development”.

• Also in 2009, Konai was a keynote speaker in Tokyo at the Asia Pacific Forum on ESD, reviewing progress in the first half of the UNDESD. And at her university in Fiji, she spoke as a panelist in a workshop on youth and ESD.

• CEC member Katalin Czippán reported on the first meeting of the UNECE Expert Group on Competences in Education for Sustainable Development, attended by five CEC members.

• CEC member Dieter Gross coordinated a survey about the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (UNDESD), with responses from 21 experts in a Japan plus an additional 108 international experts.

• CEC member Edgar González Gaudiano published a book on education, environment and sustainability, "Educación, medio ambiente y sustentabilidad" and presented it at the education research congress in Mexico.

• CEC member Maurilio Cipparone announced the launch of the EU’s Central Europe Programme for environmental sustainability in the region. 

Training and courses

• CEC member Peter Adler offered a new course that addresses cross sector collaboration by exploring how to bring together Industry, Government and Community Leaders to work together on a politically difficult problem.

• CEC member Mohit Mukherjee conducted at seminar at UPEACE on “Educating for the 21st Century” in July in Costa Rica.

• CEC member Peter Townsend offered the course “English Language for Environmentalists: Communication and Language Skills” at Losehill Training, UK.

• CEC member Diana Pound offered a variety of training courses through her organization Dialogue Matters, such as “Good Practice Stakeholder Participation with a focus on the environment.”

• CEC member Arturo Curiel Ballesteros was engaged in planning an environmental information centre in Spain.

• CEC member Gillian Martin Mehers conducted a training workshop on Systems Thinking for Transformational Change to LEAD’s European Cohort in London.

• CEC members shared resources throughout the year such as an online course on climate change and REDD and a four-part web seminar about systems thinking, offered by the Sustainability Institute and isee systems inc.
