Global Warming and Sustainable Cities

The Environment Protection and Development Authority of Ras Al Khaimah (EPDA-RAK), UAE, under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Saud Bin Al Qasimi, the Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah is organizing 2nd International Conference on "Global Warming: Sustainable Cities": May 5-7, 2013.

Sustainability is a way to make our cities and communities more liveable by balancing economic, social and environmental needs. At the core of sustainability, is science and technology. Science & technology are the catalyst for change in the growth of cities and urban areas around the world and influences construction, transportation, health and living spaces. Advances in social sciences are having an impact on social development, city management, planning, and social and economic development.

With the understanding that half of the world’s people live in cities and that this proportion is growing to 60 percent by 2030 and 70 percent by 2050, the pressure and implications on the natural infrastructure are increasing and are threatening our nature and livelihoods, the International Union for Conservation of nature (IUCN) will be extending support the Environment Protection and Development Authority (EPDA-RAK) on this Conference. IUCN believes that investing urban-nature ecosystem planning constitutes an important angle in supporting sustained social and economic development and shall create the backbone for urban resilience to climatic changes. In early 2012 IUCN started its unique Project URBES (Urban Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services) which aims at bridging the knowledge gap on urbanisation processes and the ecosystem services sustaining them.

The Conference will be attended and supported by many others including renowned international scientists/experts from (Al Faisal University KSA, Western Washington University, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) USA, and many others.

Presentations with different topics will address the following conference themes:
