The Directorate General for Environment of the Federal Public Service for the Environment, in cooperation with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) will organize the conference "Closing the International Year of Biodiversity 2010: How to better communicate the value of biodiversity? – A green future and benefits for all – Biodiversity and social responsibility" on 14 December 2010 at Bois du Cazier, Belgium.
The year 2010 has been a crucial year for biodiversity. It is the International Year of Biodiversity, as proclaimed by the United Nations, and the year when Belgium, holding the EU Presidency, led the EU in negotiations on the future of biodiversity policy at the 10th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP10) in Nagoya, Japan.
The Belgian Presidency will host this conference in order to present and provide an opportunity to discuss the current biodiversity EU policy developments. Indeed the recent CBD COP10 outcomes, together with The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB) results, will be presented in light of the upcoming EU 2020 Strategy and EU Post-2010 Biodiversity Strategy. Discussions started during the Belgian Presidency on sustainable materials and resource efficiency, sustainable consumption and production patterns will also be addressed during the conference, particularly through the socioeconomic value of ecosystems to society.
The aim of this event is to start translating these crucial policy actions into practical terms for “use on the ground” and the recommendations of TEEB into concrete and pragmatic commitments for the civil society at large – to increase their understanding of the socio-economic value of biodiversity for society. Several representatives from public and private sector, consumer groups, NGOs, trade unions and local actors will also present their commitments to conserve biodiversity and how to engage on a long term within their activities.
This event will mark the closing of the International Year of Biodiversity and will launch a number of new multi-stakeholder initiatives.
The registration form (link below) should be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org by Monday 6th December.
