Implementing Disaster Risk Reduction in the Arab Region

A regional workshop on the ‘Implementation of the Arab Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction and Developing an Arab position on the post-2015 framework on disaster risk reduction (HFA2)’ was launched on the 25th of November 2013.

The workshop was funded by theUnited Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the League of Arab States and others.

IUCN, Regional Office for West Asia (ROWA) participated in the two day event which gathered policy-makers from different sectors in the Arab world. It aimed at putting the last touches on the Arab strategy for disaster risk reduction and evaluating the regional progress and main institutional challenges of implementing this strategy on both the local and national levels.

The Arab region has experienced an increase in natural disasters and wars, which puts Arab countries in front of a huge challenge and reduces its capacity for disaster risk reduction. This situation has led the League of Arab States to use the post-2015 framework (HFA2)which aims to raise the awareness for disaster risk reduction.

The aforementioned workshop is designed to fill in the gaps and face the challenges that prevent the implantation of the Arab strategy for disaster risk reduction.
