IUCN Nepal celebrates Environment Day

Building on the past successful experiences, IUCN Nepal observed World Environment Day 2008 with awareness raising programmes to promote environmental awareness amongst the masses.

Amidst more than 1500 participants in the Green Walk, the message "Kick the Habit! Towards a Low Carbon Emission" was advocated loud and clear that paraded in major thoroughfares of Lalitpur district.

The World Environment Day celebration was jointly organised by IUCN Nepal Country Office, Lalitpur Sub-Metropolitan City, Central Zoo of the National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC) and WWF Nepal.

Mr. Narayan Belbase, IUCN Nepal Country Representative, said that Environment Day is one of the principal vehicles through which IUCN stimulates public awareness of environment preservation and enhances national attention and action.

Chief guest, Honorable Minister of Forests and Soil Conservation Mr. Matrika Prasad Yadav, shed light on the importance of educating and mobilizing people for environmental protection.

During the ceremony, Mr. Bimal Kumar Baniya, Member Secretary of the NTNC, presented welcome remarks and urged all to work unitedly in reinforcing the environmental commitment.

Similarly, IUCN Nepal has also participated in a week-long environmental exhibition organised by the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology.

IUCN Nepal has been celebrating Environment Day to rekindle public commitment and involve participation from across social sectors that are aimed at catalyzing environmental values and broadening public support for environment preservation.
