Maher Mahjoub, new Vice Chair of the IUCN WCPA

Maher Mahjoub from Tunisia has just been named Vice Chair of the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas for the region encompassing North Africa, the Middle East and Western Asia.

Mr Mahjoub, a geological engineer and current Head of the Natural Sites and Heritage Division at the Ministry of the Environment and Sustainable Development in Tunisia, said that he feels “very honoured by this appointment” as well as grateful for the support received from regional Councillors, the Director of the Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation, Margarita Astralaga, and Odeh Al-Jayyousi, Director of the IUCN Regional Office for Central and Western Asia located in Amman.

For several years, Mr Mahjoub has actively worked and participated in different events organized by the IUCN and the Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation, amongst which include the Azahar Programme, IUCN Mediterranean Members’ meetings and the IUCN Protected Area Categories Summit held in Almeria. In addition to this, he played a fundamental role in Mediterranean events during the Congress in Barcelona.
