Responsible production of marine ingredients to feed fish is a prerequisite for the sustainability of the sector

Brussels, March 4th 2010: “Can a growing aquaculture industry continue to use fishmeal and fish oil in feeds and remain sustainable?” This is the critical question the EP Intergroup on Climate Change, Biodiversity and Sustainable Development tried to provide answers to at a high level seminar organised in the European Parliament on 3rd March. Different experts, including academics, scientists, NGOs, private sector, and institutions, presented their views on the sustainability of aquaculture, especially the use of marine ingredients in fish feeds, - an issue at the centre of last week’s Hearing held by the EP Fisheries Committee. The EP Intergroup meeting was chaired by Mr Gallagher, Member of the European Parliament (MEP) and Chair of the subgroup “Fisheries and Aquaculture” of the Intergroup. …

Supporting Drought Policies in Europe: Biodiversity and Good Water Quality

Drought experts met in Brussels on 22 – 24 February to attend the Xerochore Final Conference on Supporting Drought Policies in Europe. Xerochore is an EU funded research project designed to assess research needs and policy choices on drought for the EU. The conference brought together planners, water resource experts, environment specialists, climatologists, and economists to discuss the challenges of drought identification and characterisation, the environmental and socio-economic impacts of drought, and management choices and policy options for drought based on EU Member State and overseas experience. …

New Members’ Portal: Resolutions and Recommendations System

European Parliament Intergroup Meeting on CITES

The European Parliament (EP) hosted on 27th January 2010 a meeting on CITES (The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) in preparation of the CITES COP15 in Doha. The prestigious panel presented to 50 odd Members of the European Parliament (MEPs), assistants and representatives of various organisations their views on this International Convention. It enabled discussion to continue within the EP on several critical issues such as elephants, polar bears, and marine species, with a view to better preparing the EP Resolution, to be voted in Plenary next week, and the CITES COP15 in Doha in March. The event was chaired by MEP Sturdy, MEP Gutierrez-Cortines, MEP Skylakakis and MEP Franco. …
