ABS Side Event at ICNP2

10 July 2012 | News story

On Wednesday, 04 July, 2012, the IUCN Environmental Law Centre and the IUCN Global Policy Unit held a side event at the second meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Nagoya Protocol (ICNP-2) in New Delhi, in order to present the third draft of an IUCN Explanatory Guide to the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization to the Convention on Biological Diversity. This Guide will facilitate a clear understanding of the text of the ABS Protocol and the resulting obligations for the Parties to the Convention. Furthermore, it will provide guidance for the development of ABS legislation and implementation at the national level.

200 CDs with the third draft of the Guide were prepared beforehand and were distributed among the audience as well as participants of ICNP-2. The side event provided an opportunity to explain the process for the development of the Guide, in particular its structure and approach. Furthermore, it provided a platform for the German Ministry for Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) as the main donor of the project, to explain the importance of the Guide from a country’s perspective. The third draft can be downloaded at

The final publication will be launched at the upcoming CBD COP XI in Hyderabad, India.
