IUCN @ CBD Resumed ABS9

The resumed ninth meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on Access and Benefit-sharing of the Convention on Biological Diversity took place from 10-16 July 2010, in Montréal, Canada.

It was the last chance for the Working Group to meet prior the CBD COP10 (from 18-29 October in Nagoya), where the international regime on access and benefit-sharing is to be adopted.

A draft protocol was accepted by Parties as a basis for further negotiations during the first part of the ninth meeting on ABS (22-28 March, Colombia). Since it was not possible to agree on the proposed text, the Working Group decided to resume the Ninth meeting at a later date.

Negotiations in Montreal are expected to focus on the revised draft protocol in order to present a text to be further negotiated and adopted at the CBD COP10 in Nagoya.
