Frustrations at CBD

22 May 2008 | Audio

The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), currently meeting in Bonn, established an open-ended intergovernmental scientific advisory body known as the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA) to provide the Conference of the Parties (COP) with timely advice relating to the implementation of the Convention.

SBSTTA has met 13 times to date and produced a total of 129 recommendations to the COP, some of which have been endorsed in full by the latter. Such endorsement makes these recommendations de facto decisions of the COP. Parts of other recommendations have also been endorsed, and many others have been taken up in modified form.

The Thirteenth meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice was held in FAO, Rome, Italy (18 - 22 February 2008).

However the Chairman of SBSTTA, Asghar Fazel, isn't all together happy with the progress being made in Bonn so far.
